A Brief History. Much has been written about the library over the years including a book available for loan on our shelves. Written by Patsey-Ruth Richards, who was a volunteer right from the start, "The First Ten Years" tells of our early progress.
First established with help from the Shire Library in Nambour, all went well until a disastrous fire in 1992, which destroyed the building and all the books. As a result of the loss, the Shire Library would no longer lend us book stock, and from then on, we were responsible for building and contents.
The community showed how much they cared about the survival of our library by setting to work, raising money and lobbying Councillors. Everyone was astounded when the fantastic first "Bike Show" raised the incredible amount of $7,000 to give us the start we needed to convince government that Mapleton was serious about establishing its own library. The RSL gave us space in their park; we acquired a building, moved it to our new site and then sought funding.
The Bike Show ran for several years and always provided the library with considerable and essential funds. Our volunteers were also fundraising every way they could. Maroochy Shire Council finally gave us funding for book stock, which over the years increased from $10,00.00pa to $15,000.00pa. and the volunteers raised the rest. Sadly, 2009 saw our Council funding cut to just $7,000.00, so we have another hill to climb.
Next Event: Book Sale: ---- A wide selection of books, which have been culled from our shelves, at bargain prices.
Cake Stall: Our volunteers and supporters bake for this fund raising event. We appreciate donations from everybody's kitchen.
